Why is multiculturalism important?

The United States is a very diverse country. There are many different cultures, religions, traditions, and ethnic backgrounds. However, many of us do not take the time to learn about our classmates and coworkers who are different than ourselves. It is natural to gravitate toward those whom with we identify. In addition, I know some times you may feel like you do not have anything in common with someone who has a different background than yourself however; if you never learn about people who are different than you, how will you ever really know if you have anything in common with them? Think of all the new people you will meet and the new experiences you will gain through learning about other cultures and groups. Do not let stereotypes and generalizations stop you from educated yourself on the people with whom you are around.

I have created this link in order to better educate everyone within the school about cultures and groups different from one’s own. Every month this link will provide information on a certain culture. I encourage students, parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and other faculty members to check out this link each month to see what new things you can learn about another culture. If anyone checks out the link and has more questions, please feel free to come by my office. I would be more than happy to provide more information. Finally, if anyone has knowledge about the specific culture of the month and would like to help me create the page for that culture, please come by and see me because I would like to provide as much information as I can about each culture.

I hope everyone takes the time to check this link out each month. The first culture presented will be Native Americans or American Indians, and I hope to have the page complete by the beginning of October.
